The stair is on show

In a two-story home, the stair is often the first thing you see through a glass front door. The railing is the part of the stair you notice, and the part you touch.

Iron gives it weight and line that wood spindles cannot. Not only does it hold up to daily use, but it also carries the same scroll pattern as the front door, so the whole entry reads as one design.

A stair is something you look at as often as you climb.

Where railings go

  • Curved limestone stair with a black iron scroll railing and wood handrail in a bright hall

    Inside stairs

The main stair, a back stair or a short run of steps between rooms.

  • Iron balcony railing with small scroll accents on a white stucco home with a tile roof

    Balconies and landings

Upstairs landings that look over the front hall, and balconies outside.

  • Black iron handrail beside limestone front steps leading up to an arched steel and glass door

    Porches and front steps

A short rail at the front steps, matched to the door above it.

  • Iron railing along a raised wood deck facing a lake at sunset

    Decks and patios

Outdoor rails that face sun and rain. See rust care for keeping them looking new.

The code a railing has to meet

Every railing has a job before it has a look. Most Texas cities use the International Residential Code for homes, and its basic railing rules are simple.

  • A guard is needed where a floor, stair or deck is more than 30 inches above the ground below it
  • Guards stand at least 36 inches high
  • Openings are small enough that a 4 inch ball cannot pass through
  • Stair handrails sit between 34 and 38 inches high, measured from the front edge of the step

Your city may add its own rules. Ask your city or your builder which code applies before you order.

Safe comes first. Beautiful comes right behind it.

Choose the look

  • Scrollwork

Scrolls between the bars, in the pattern of your front door.

  • Straight bars

Clean upright bars for a modern stair.

  • Handrail

An iron top rail, or a wood handrail on iron.
