Energy-efficient thermal break iron doors
Steel moves heat. A thermal break slows it down, so an iron door or window stays energy efficient in Houston heat. Our patented thermally broken insulation is an upgrade on any Amador door or window, custom or ready to install.

What a thermal break does
Steel is strong, and steel conducts heat. On a solid steel frame, the August sun on the outside works its way to the handle on the inside. A thermal break is a layer that blocks most of that heat, set between the outside steel and the inside steel, so far less heat gets through.
Our design is patented. It works the same against heat and direct sun as it does against cold. We tested it the hard way, not in a lab: a door set into an insulated room packed with 200 kilos of dry ice. It held 75 degrees Fahrenheit on the inside with -16 degrees Fahrenheit on the cold side.
Iron on the outside, comfort on the inside.
Standard on every door, and the upgrade
- Every door
- Polyurethane foam injected into the door and the jamb, 5/8 inch insulated glass, and marine-grade EPDM seals on glass that opens.
- The upgrade
- Patented thermally broken insulation, available on custom doors, ready-to-install doors and windows.
Who should add it
Every entry is different, but a few call for it more than others.
- Doors that face west and take the afternoon sun
- Walls of glass, like bifold doors and steel windows
- Entries into rooms you keep cool, like a wine room
- Homes where the front hall is part of the living space
The hotter the sun on the door, the more the break is worth.
Questions buyers ask
What is a thermal break door?
It is a steel door with an insulating layer between the outside steel and the inside steel, so much less heat and cold moves through the frame.
Can I add a thermal break to any Amador door?
Yes. Our thermally broken insulation is an upgrade on custom doors, ready-to-install doors and windows.
Does it help with heat, or only cold?
Both. Our patented design works the same for heat and direct sun as it does for cold.
Is a thermal break worth it in Houston?
It adds cost. It makes the most sense on doors and glass that face the afternoon sun. Ask us about your entry.
